What is in store in the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair?

Guilds Address

The countdown has begun for the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair 2016. It is to be held from 27 January to 7 February 2016, the largest book fair in the world. Bolivia will be the Focal Theme Country in 2016. The year which is coincidentally the 50th year of Che Guevara’s immortal struggle against imperialism in Bolivia. The book fair will be inaugurated by Ms Magela Baudoin, a noted  litterateur and novelist of the Focal Theme Country, Bolivia, in the presence of our Honored Chief Guest, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries.

Ms Magela Baudoin is the Bolivian National Award winner for Novels in 2014 and was recently awarded the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Spanish American Short Story Award for her collection of La Composicion de La Sal (Salt’s Composition).

This year will also see Vietnam as the Guest of Honor Country at the International Kolkata Book Fair. A large delegation of authors, publishers, dancers and singers from Vietnam will be attending the Fair in commemoration of the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair 2016.

As 2016 signifies 60 years of diplomatic relationship between India and Spain, it will be celebrated by a special appearance by Spain at the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair 2016. Other Latin American countries like Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico and Surinam will also be participating.

There are a number of things that will happen for the first time in IKBF 2016:

This happens to be the first time that Guatemala and Surinam are participating. Ambassadors and other delegates from these countries will take part in the seminars and the lectures.

UK, USA, France, Japan, Peru, Turkey and Bangladesh would be reprising their roles as participants in IKBF 2016. Norway will be participating in IKBF 2016 along with a direct representation of Chinese publishers through China Intercontinental Press, for the very first time. Also, Costa Rican publisher, Hands Internacional(International) will participate in the International Kolkata Book Fair accompanied by University of Costa Rica.

Coming back to our Focal Theme Country, Bolivia: there will be a number of programs such as musical performances, dance performances and a food festival.

On 28 January 2016, there will be a dance program by artists from Vietnam in the main auditorium.

Renowned French author Abdourahman Waberi winner of Grand prix litteraire d’Afrique noire award of France will be present  the Book Fair, on 29th January 2016.

Besides all of this, five Vietnamese painters, Duc Hung, Huy Hung, Khac Chinh, Quy Kein and Tao Houng will represent Vietnamese contemporary art in all its forms in an exhibition at the Book Fair.

In comparison to the earlier years, there will be more representation of the publishers from the different States of India.

Now let us come to the developments that we have tried to implement in the 2016 edition of the International Kolkata Book Fair.

The website of International Kolkata Book Fair will be more user-friendly and more interactive. It will have a new look, and have more information about the IKBF. People can share their experiences with us and we will publish those through our blogs.

The special mobile app for the Book Fair will be updated, through which visitors will be able to locate any stall of their choice with the direction. They will also be informed of the important programs of the International Kolkata Book Fair 2016.

Even without the mobile app, locating stalls this year will be much easier as we have changed the ground layout and divided the ground in different colour zones. The ground plan will be uploaded on the website, mobile app and lacs of hard copies will be freely distributed during the Fair.

The Book Privilege Card of the previous years will continue and the customers who are Book Privilege Card-Holders will be entitled to special discounts and will be allowed to participate in a lucky draw to be held on the last day of the Fair. The winners will get attractive prizes and gift hampers.

Kolkata Book Fair added another feather to its cap two years back starting the first ever Literature Festival at Kolkata Book Fair premises. Last year, Kolkata Literature Festival achieved new heights with the participation of the personalities like Amartya Sen, Sugata Basu, Vishal Bharadwaj, Bedabrata Pyne, Shobhaa De, Nandana Sen, Sandip Ray, Sudha Murthy and the likes. The 3rd Kolkata Literature Festival (KLF) will be held from 4th to 6th February 2016. Noted personalities will attend specially designed sessions and panel discussions related to literature, film, drama, music, dance, and many more.

We look forward to having you with us from the 27th January to 7th February, 2016 at the Milan Mela Grounds from 12pm-8pm. Come, join us in the biggest Book Festival, the International Kolkata Bookfair. Our website has all the contact details. For any query/questions/feedback, drop us a mail at [email protected]
